Abstract

Content generation applications like YouTube, Bit torrent and social networks have completely changed the use of the Internet for which it was designed first. Communication has shifted from retrieving data from servers to generating data by users. This gave birth to a new Internet architecture called Named Data Networking (NDN) which proved its ability to solve traditional TCP/IP-based Internet problems, namely, location dependent, complex usage, scalability, node mobility, intermittent connectivity, network overhead, misuse of resources, etc. Therefore, this consumes continuously energy resources. NDN paradigm that relies on name-based forwarding and caching data in the network have higher energy efficiency than the current Internet architecture by introducing content centering approach and retrieval from intermediate routers. However, these characteristics impose new challenges. In this paper, we will describe the motivation, the basic components and main features of NDN, highlighting points of strengths and weaknesses. Also, we will propose a survey of key solutions that aim to improve energy efficiency by focusing on solutions related to caching strategy. The final discussion aims to identify the main open challenges and some future directions for NDN deployment on a large scale.
