Abstract

With the development of power grid interconnection, the low frequency oscillation including local modes and inter-area modes is becoming more notable. And the effectiveness of local power system stabilizer (LPSS) in damping inter-area modes is not very well. Then the global PSS (GPSS) based on WAMS (wide area measurement system) is proposed which is aimed to damp inter-area modes. This paper summarizes the proposal of the GPSS based on WAMS and describes 4 problems about the global damping control: model identification, the design of GPSS, the choice of GPSS location and input signals. Then the delay and reliability for the global damping control are analyzed. Some new viewpoints and solutions based on WAMS in monitoring and analysis of low frequency oscillations are researched. The deep research on applications of WAMS in power systems is worth much.
