Abstract

A simple 10 Gbit/s all-optical logic XOR gate based on cross-phase modulation(XPM) in highly nonlinear fibers (HNLF)is numerically demonstrated. By using a Kerr shutter, the polarization rotation induced by Kerr effect in a short HNLF can restraint the residual light wave because of incomplete destructive interference, and the extinction ratio (ER) of the XOR gate is expected to increase by approximately 13 dB. The implementation simplicity and high-bit-rate operation make the proposed device suitable for ultra fast applications in the emerging all-optical networks.
