Abstract

It is difficult for hearing-impaired people to communicate with others when they go out alone and meet trouble. Because the number of Chinese hearing-impaired people is about 30 million, there are only 20 thousand interpreters in China. On the other hand, it is quite difficult to arrange for an interpreter in every hospital or information center. Therefore, it is necessary to introduce a sign language translation system, instead of training millions of interpreters, in order to solve the problem of communication barriers for the hearing-impaired people. In this research, we focus on mammographic screening instruction because of the lowering ages of breast cancer in recent years. Videos of the signer who translated instructions on mammographic screening from Chinese to Chinese sign language (CSL) is videoed to compare with the sign language animation. After the animation was produced, advice was received from Chinese hearing-impaired people through comparing the video and animation so as to improve the sign animation in both body movement and face expression.
