Abstract

The IceCube Neutrino telescope, based at the South Pole, has chosen to build its control and monitoring system around the Java management extensions (JMX) standards, JSR-003 and JSR-160. This paper reviews these standards; explains the benefits of adopting them; reviews the off-the-shelf implementation and tools, based on these standards, selected by IceCube; and discusses how everything is brought together to create the "experiment control" system that is used by IceCube to control, configure and monitor both the experiment itself and the software that is running at the South Pole.
