LOS ALAMITOS, Calif., 31 July 2024 – Today, the IEEE Computer Society (CS), the world’s largest computer science and engineering member community, announced that, once again, its journals led the industry in Journal Impact FactorTM (JIFTM) rankings. Specifically, 12 IEEE CS journals now hold the coveted top impact factor ranking in their respective research areas.
“Impact factor rankings provide an annual recognition of the journals at the top of their fields,” said Jyotika Athavale, 2024 IEEE CS President. “As a publisher of first-class, peer-reviewed research, the Computer Society is honored to have its journals acknowledged year after year. This distinction reaffirms our community’s commitment to excellence, and we want to thank our editors and reviewers for their hard work.”
Annually, Clarivate releases its Journal Citation Reports™ (JCR™), which deliver JIF rankings. These reports evaluate more than 21,500 high-quality academic journals from across more than 250 scientific and research disciplines. The JIF measures the frequency with which the average article in a publication has been cited in a particular year. The calculation is based on a two-year period and involves dividing the number of times articles were cited by the number of articles that are citable. It offers a key metric to assess the overall strength and industry influence of a particular publication.
Delivering the highest impact factor of all artificial intelligence (AI) journals, IEEE Transactions on Pattern Analysis and Machine Intelligence (TPAMI) led IEEE CS impact factor rankings, with the following rounding out the top five most-cited IEEE CS journals this year:
“These rankings not only represent the strength of the research coming from the computer science and engineering community, but they also demonstrate emerging trends,” shared Athavale. “Citations give us a line of sight into areas of emerging research and emphasize the topics affecting today’s broader landscape. From AI to big data, we are seeing this community seeking solutions to problems plaguing the world at large.”
For instance, to address the growing multidisciplinary demand for the theoretical, methodological, engineering, and applications aspects of privacy and data protection, this year, IEEE CS launched the open-access journal IEEE Transactions on Privacy. The publication began accepting papers as of January and will be eligible to be included for the first time in the 2027 impact factor review.
