LOS ALAMITOS, Calif., 16 August 2024 – The IEEE Computer Society (IEEE-CS), known for producing trusted content in computer science and engineering, seeks applicants for the position of editor in chief (EIC) for several of its leading publications.
EIC terms begin on 1 January 2026 and are for two years, renewable for an additional two years, unless noted otherwise below.
The application deadline is 1 March 2025.

IEEE-CS publications are the cornerstone of professional activities for our members and the community we serve. We are seeking candidates who are familiar with our publications and who possess an excellent understanding of the field as it relates to academic, industry, and governmental areas. Candidates must also have successful experience attracting and developing a diverse team of talented and respected individuals to serve key editorial board roles. Demonstrated managerial skills are also required, as they are necessary to ensure rich content and issue development, along with timely processing of submissions through the editorial cycle.
Specific responsibilities include:
- embracing and encouraging equity, diversity, and inclusion among the Editorial Board, authors, and reviewers
- providing a clear, broad focus through promotion of personal vision and guidance where appropriate;
- identifying and appointing a diverse pool of qualified and engaged editorial board members, with the concurrence of the IEEE-CS Publications Board or the cosponsored publication’s Steering Committee;
- directing editorial board members and other collaborators to work as a team in the development of special-issue proposals and manuscripts in specific areas;
- actively soliciting novel, high-quality manuscripts from potential authors and, with support from publication staff, helping these authors get their manuscripts published;
- ensuring the selection of competent manuscript reviewers, with the help of editorial board members, and managing timely reviews of manuscripts; and
- resolving conflicts or problems as necessary.
EIC applicants must be IEEE members in good standing; must possess recognized expertise in the computer science and engineering community; must have previous editorial experience and familiarity with IEEE publications; and must bring the tangible and ideological support of their employer.

- A letter describing institutional/employer support for this editorship (including alleviation of a portion of teaching or project responsibilities, administrative and travel support, and so on), should this position be offered.
- A plan or vision statement detailing the applicant’s course of action and plans with respect to the publication. This plan should include:
- the applicant’s perspective of the publication, including challenges and opportunities;
- the tasks of the EIC to meet the challenges and to leverage the opportunities;
- the objective milestones associated with the intermediate and final accomplishment of these tasks;
- the projected schedules for the accomplishment of these milestones;
- the projected organization that will accomplish these tasks, including suggested individuals to recruit to the board or the type of expertise that would be most beneficial; and
- the funding requirements to accomplish these tasks, if any.
