In the particular case of Costa Rica, most bridges were built more than 30 years ago and investment in their maintenance has been minimal. This has resulted in a large number of them being in a fair to poor condition.
In response to this problem, The e-Bridge Research Group from El Instituto Tecnologico de Costa Rica (TEC) has set out to develop and design innovative and low-cost solutions for the structural health and management of Costa Rica’s bridges. This effort collaborates with students and researchers from multiple institutes to implement communication and information technology to monitor the variables associated with a bridge’s health.
