Dear ComputingEdge reader:
Information Technology (IT) has become the foundation of our society. Nearly everything we do runs on or is impacted by IT in some way. Unfortunately, attendant with our reliance on IT is an increasing dependance on and consumption of electricity and thus an increasing contribution to climate change. This issue of ComputingEdge examines the challenge of how to support our growing technology use in lower-impact and more sustainable ways. With the integration of virtual worlds, IT is on a trajectory to become even more deeply ingrained in our society. This issue also explores elements of the metaverse—what it is and what it could become—as well as challenges with implementation. Enjoy this issue!
