IEEE Computer Society Summer SchoolThe Region 10 IEEE Computer Society (R10 CS) Summer School recently held its second successful annual event at Vellore Institute of Technology (VIT), Vellore, India, from 23 to 27 September 2024.

Designed to bridge the gap between academia and industry, this hands-on summer school program introduced students to cutting-edge technologies and helped them prepare for industry demands upon graduation. It brought together 36 third- and final-year students from throughout India, giving them essential training in areas such as artificial intelligence (AI), wireless sensors, and Internet of Things (IoT) applications.

Through hands-on projects and expert lectures, students were trained to solve real-time problems—an essential skill for future engineers. The program also incorporated hands-on sessions from experts who described their real-world projects, providing a platform for industry professionals to share their requirements. This helped universities and institutions customize training for future employment opportunities and develop employment-ready graduates.

A comprehensive five-day program

The summer school was split into two daily sessions over five days, blending lectures with active learning. In the mornings, students attended talks delivered by Distinguished Visitor Program (DVP) speakers, helping to introduce real-world insights from experienced professionals. Each evening, participants engaged in hands-on sessions, allowing them to apply their newly acquired knowledge practically.

On the last day, students presented projects based on what they learned over the five-day program. Presentations from groups included newfound knowledge on “Pet tracking and management systems” and “Using biometrics for door access and security applications.” These projects allowed students to work on real-world issues and provided them with applied experience in building systems that could be expanded and scaled in their future careers.

“The R10 CS Summer School teaches how to organize events systematically and manage challenges effectively. I hope we can continue this R10 CS Summer School next year and be considered one of the successful R10 CS Flagship programs,” said Mohamed Rawidean, Regional Coordinator, IEEE Computer Society, Region 10.

Positive feedback and impact on tomorrow’s engineers

Hosted by VIT, the event’s organization received positive feedback, with participants expressing high satisfaction with the accommodations, logistics, food, and quality of course materials. These amenities allowed students to focus on their learning experience without distractions.

“The experience gained from the R10CSSS will give the students confidence in building more complex systems in near future,” added Rawidean.

Future plans

This was the second generation of this event, with the inaugural program taking place at the Anil Neerukonda Institute of Technology and Sciences (ANITS) Engineering College in Visakhapatnam. With two years’ experience in delivering solid results, the R10 CS Summer School has shown potential to become a flagship event that shapes industry-ready graduates. Future efforts will ideally bring even more volunteers and industry participants to share their expertise, said Rawidean.

Looking ahead, the team aims to extend this valuable program beyond India. As the summer school continues to grow, it holds promise for the future and prepares students for successful careers in the fast-evolving fields of AI, IoT, and beyond.
