IT-Enabled Support for Anesthesia Preoperative Evaluation Clinics

Going under anesthesia might seem like a minor affair to some patients, but it is fraught with potentially dangerous risks. Anesthesiologists ask careful preoperative questions about health problems such as diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, obesity, seizures, and sleep apnea. Patients' responses, as well as general medical guidelines on cardiac arrest and stroke, help doctors to determine a proper anesthetic care plan. Most hospital information management systems display and store patient records. However, researchers have developed a system that includes medical guidelines and risk-estimating algorithms to help anesthesiologists assess risk factors related to their patients’ medical history.
