LOS ALAMITOS, Calif., 23 May 2016 — Giovanni De Micheli, a Fellow of ACM and IEEE, and a member of the Academia Europaea, has been selected to receive the 2016 Computer Society Harry H. Goode Award.
The Goode Award was established to recognize achievement in the information-processing field – either a single contribution of theory, design, or technique of outstanding significance; or the accumulation of important contributions on theory or practice over an extended period. De Micheli received the award “for seminal contributions to design and design tools for Networks on Chips.”
Network on Chip (NoC) is a paradigm to enable high-performance and low-energy communication in multi-processing systems and blend network and VLSI circuit design technologies. NoCs were pioneered by De Micheli and co-workers at Stanford University at the turn of the century. Today they are used — possibly under different names — by virtually all manufacturers of large silicon chips. The seminal work on NoCs was published in Computer Magazine in 2002 and received more than 3500 citations. De Micheli continued his work on NoCs and on NoC design tools at EPFL (Swiss Federal Polytechnic Institute) in Lausanne for over a decade.
Currently De Micheli is a professor of electrical engineering and computer science as well as Director of the Institute of Electrical Engineering at EPFL. He is program leader of the Nano-Tera.ch Swiss research program, a broad initiative fostering the use of nano and info technologies within large-scale systems for health management and environmental monitoring. Within this program, De Micheli coordinated the realization of advanced prototypes that network sensing and computing nodes.
De Micheli is author of Synthesis and Optimization of Digital Circuits, McGraw-Hill, 1994 and of Networks on Chips, Elsevier, 2006 (with L. Benini) as well as co-author or co-editor of seven other books and of over 700 technical articles. He is member of the Scientific Advisory Board of IMEC (Leuven, B), CfAED (Dresden, D) and STMicroelectronics. He is the recipient of the 2016 EDAA Lifetime Achievement Award, of the 2012 IEEE/CAS Mac Van Valkenburg award for contributions to theory, practice and experimentation in design methods and tools and of the 2003 IEEE Emanuel Piore Award for contributions to computer-aided synthesis of digital systems.
Prof. De Micheli is a longtime member of the IEEE Computer Society. He has been serving IEEE in several capacities, namely: Division 1 Director (2008–2009), co-founder and President Elect of the IEEE Council on EDA (2005-7), President of the IEEE CAS Society (2003), Editor-in-chief of the IEEE Transactions on CAD/ICAS (1997–2001). He has been Chair of several conferences, including Memocode (2014) DATE (2010), pHealth (2006), VLSI SOC (2006), DAC (2000) and ICCD (1989).
